FAMM - 26th October

FAMM is set to take a slight detour from our majestic mountains down to the ocean where a route of beauty, sand and sea awaits all Athletes. We are blessed with the best of both worlds in this awesome city so why not take advantage of this and head down to the beach for a morning run with a difference!

What date: Friday, 26th October

What Route: We will start from the Primi Piatti side of Camps Bay beach and jog along the water's edge before hopping over onto Glen beach and along this surfers paradise, before we head up the stairs and make a quick dash along the tar to La Med. Here we will wind our way through the legendary La Med, through the back streets of Clifton and down onto 4th Beach where white sand and 1st class beaches await our footprints. We will jog along here before attacking the steps back up onto the tar and along to the Bantry Benches for some view time. From here its an easy "jog it in" along the tar back down onto Camps Beach where the ocean awaits our energized bodies!

What time: 5:45am sharp...ready to footprint the beach by 6am. Give yourself enough time to wind your way over from the "burbs".

Where do I park: Camps Bay, Victoria Rd on the beachfront outside the Caltex Garage and Nandos.

FLA'S: Dogs, leads and poop bags are more than welcome!

What to bring: For those of you are are brave enough to take a dip in the ocean afterwards, bring your costumes and a towel...we encourage Baywatch colours!

Kleinplaas Dam - Sunday, 07th October!!

Athletes,

This Sunday sees a return to a very gentle walk above Simon's Town to the Kleinplaas Dam. The route is expected to take around two and a half hours. It is a circular route that will bring us back to our cars via the Brooklands Community Ruins.

How to get there: Take the coastal road towards Cape Point and turn right just before you get into Simon's Town, heading up towards Red Hill. Once on the top, there are a cluster of houses called Pinehaven, turn right and follow the road for approximately 3km's to an old farm house, park 50m before this on the left.

Time: 9:20am meet, 9:30am start!!

Weather: The weather is looking as if it should be clearing by Sunday with temperatures creeping into the twenties and CLEAR.

Post hike vibe: There are a number of places along the way home to stop for a bite to eat or a beer. Polana, Brass Bell or The Quaterdeck in Simon's Town for breakfast, so no doubt we'll be pulling into one of them after.

This is definately a dog-friendly walk, so bring along all the pooches you can find!!!

See everyone on Sunday!!

A City of Choice

The mountain of choice looms

This Sunday holds a choice of routes depending on what the weather has in store for us! The plans are to meet at Kloof Nek Parking, just off Kloof Nek Rd at 9am and then, depending on the group size and the weather forecast, a decision will be made accordingly. The options are the Pipe Track, Lion's Head, Kloof Corner and contour path and perhaps even a summit up to the Devil's Peak saddle!! Either way the morning promises to be filled with a great hike and spectacular city views!

Will keep the hike to no more than 3hrs and remember to pack enough water and a warm top in case the tablecloth descends! If you have any queries call on 082 453 4665

Hope to see you all out there as the start of summer weekends begin to awaken those hiking dreams.....

The Roaring Lion

Athletes take to the road not the mountains this Sunday

Athletes, this Sunday see's the running of the OUTsurance / 94.5 Kfm Gun Run.

With most of the EYB team taking part in this in preparation for the New York Marathon later this year there will unfortunately be no hike.

It would however be great to see some familiar faces on the promenade as we make out way around the 21.1km course.

Good luck to all those running.

EYB will be back on the mountains next Sunday.

Have a great weekend.

Coupe du Monde

The first of the New York Marathon Fund Raisers went off last night with a host of people attending a very entertaining talk on the up coming rugby world cup in France. Huge thanks to Pete Riches for the informative and highly amusing build up to Coupe du Monde.

Special thanks must go to Bev for organising the Hyslop Hall as our venue, Norma, Caro and Tom for making delicious soup for everyone to enjoy and Tom and Aly for donating wine.

Cobra Beer also stepped up and donated 4 cases of beer for us to enjoy! Huge thanks to Maryanne and the Cobra team for their contribution!

The evening saw us raising R3000, which is a great start but we do still have a long way to go to get to our R100 000.00 target. If you missed out last night but would still like to make a donation. Please see below for the banking details. Thanks again to everyone for your support!

Third Time Lucky

The flight of Spring

The hills of Kalk Bay seemed to be jinxed by some spell, as whenever we decide to take EYB into Ecco Valley, Mother Nature ambushes us with the Cape rain! So in preparation for this Sunday's hike we ask you all to pack those gumboots away, hide those umbrellas and instead take out your suncream, hats and summer smile, so we can finally end the spell that lures around the St James caves...

The Kalk Bay and Spes Bona valley allows for a few variations depending on group size and weather, so we will aim to be on the mountains for no longer than 3/3.5 hours. After all this Cape Rain this hike should hopefully be alive with the beginnings of Spring!

Parking around this area is confusing and past experience has taught us much about personal navigation - so this time to make things easier for everyone we suggest to all meet at the entrance to the BRASS BELL on main rd in Kalk Bay. From there we will wind up the cobbled streets and onto the mountain - and the by pure chance and luck we will have to end again at the BELL for a refreshing drink!

What date:
Sunday, 26th August

What time:
Meet at the Brass Bell at 8:45am so we can get onto the mountains by 9am as there is a short little uphill on the rd to get us onto the mountains.

What to bring: Your pets, friends, relatives and backpacks full of water and snacks.

We are sure that everyone has become aware of the safety issues that we are currently experiencing on our beautiful mountains after a week of headline press, so EYB encourages you to leave your valuables locked up safely in your cars or even in your homes.

As the wicked witch of the north west once said...be gone with you rain and may the sunshine of summer begin, so that the hills of Kalk Bay become alive with EYB vibe! See you out there ready for your Sunday injection of Cape magic!

Despite the rolling NW mist that came in, some amazing cloud formations provided us with some epic photo opportunities.

It was awesome to see some new faces joining in on the vibe, and we really do encourage anyone to join in. Thanks to all for making it an amazing morning on the mountains!!!

Platteklip Gorge - Maclears Beacon - Cable Way!!

Athletes,

This Sunday sees the weather looking peachy for once, so lets dust off our shoes and spend some good times on our wonderful mountains.

This week we'll head up the beautiful N1 highway of the mighty Table Mountain, Platteklip Gorge. Its a good workout, but we are going to take it very easy with the knowledge of 'NO MORE UPHILLS' once we reach the top.

We going to head left towards Maclears Beacon, but there are many different options once at the top of the mountain. We do not like splitting our groups, but there are options for those who either want an extra bone crunching ride back down Platteklip, or a leisurely stroll towards the Cable Station.

Meet time: 8:45 am at the Kloof Nek Car Park (just off Kloof Nek on the left - NOT at the Cable Station)

Estimated Time: probably an easy 3 hours of walking. Allow for some extra time in case we grab a drink or some chow, and for the trip down the mountain in the Cable Car (remember some cash for this)

Pls call 0738086116 for any queries!!

Bring your friends, your pooches, your family... anyone who would like to join!! Always pack some warm clothes, as the weather can change very quickly in the mother city!!

EYB Afternoon nudity!!

After some banter from the ladies at the Noordhoek Peak hike about the freshness of the start time we've decided to make it an EYB first and have an afternoon stroll along Sandy Bay and out to Oude Schipp point this Sunday afternoon.

The hike then comes back along a little incline up to the jeep track and after that it's an easy cruise back to the car park.

The weather is meant to be fair on Sunday so we may even be treated to a peach of a sunset at the end of the hike.

Directions: "Leaving the coastal Road between Hout Bay and Camps Bay, turn down the road to Llandudno. After 600m you will come to a sharp bend to the right. At this point continue straight along Fisherman's Bend Road. After negotiating six speed bumps, turn right into Sandy Bay Road. Then follow the sign posts to Sandy Bay all the way down Sunset Avenue almost to the bottom. On the last sharp bend there is a parking area. That's where the vibe will begin!" Meet Time: 3pm meet.

Gear up, dress warm and enjoy the spledour of Ecco Valley

Athletes,

There has been much banter about GEAR and KIT these last few weeks and this Sunday will see some of that banter...and that kit put into action, as the Cape Storm has blessed us with her winter beauty throughout this week. You may leave your house looking like the Michelin man but all will be worth it when the views and forests of Ecco Valley lay down the red carpet for you.

This hike has been foot printed in the past but there are many variations, so depending on weather and turnout be prepared to see awesome ranges of amazing rock formation, caves (no caves will be dabbled into unfortunately), waterfalls, and the beautiful indigenous Echo and Spes Bona Valley's. The hike will be no longer than 3 hours.

What date:
Sunday,29th July

What Time: 9am, ready to get on the mountain by 9:15am

Place - Where do I Park :
indicated on the Slingsby Map above. If travelling towards St James/Kalk Bay on Boyes drive - go past the Oukraal sign and a few hundred metres after that on the right is a small parking alcove and a sign that says Ecco Vally - it is the last place to park before you head down the hill into Kalk Bay. If you get lost please call Alan/Migs to ask for directions -
073 808 6116

Post Hike Vibe:
There is a host of awesome spots around this neck of the woods, but the Brass Bell is an old favourite and will likely be a pretty chilled vibe. If we make it down in time for breakfast, Olympia Cafe is a must!

What To Bring:
All the normal goods - supplies of food, coffee, tea, water etc. Also pack some wet weather gear, warm tops and beanies if the weather looks grey.

Four legged Athletes:
Dogs are welcome on this route!

This is a beautiful hike once again, especially after all the rain this week as the indigenous forest and waterfalls will be displaying their best! So to those Athletes out there wanting some mountain time this weekend, pack your gear, get your hiking boots shined up and see you out there on Sunday ready to Earn Your Breakfast!!

Noordhoek Peak beauty

Sunday saw 12 brave athletes and 2 very excited golden retrievers congregate at the Silvermine car park.

There was some banter from the ladies about the time of the hike, and we were reminded that it was still winter and that 8:15 was far to early. Fair enough ladies, perhaps 9am is more social until the sun warms a little.

We had a great hike up to the the old fire hut where there was time for some photo's, we then continued up to the summit at Noordhoek Peak where the views were once again incredible.

All in all a really great morning out, minimum effort for maximum reward.

Great to see new and old faces alike.

See you all out there again soon.

Hike time: 2 hours

Athletes take a 2 Week Winter Break from the mountains

Winter in the Cape is a funny and surprising thing - we have clear, crisp and beautiful days through the week, where athletes are out in full force soaking up the beautiful evenings and then the weekends see the return of the Cape Storm!! There goes a saying that "There is no bad weather, just bad gear" so some would argue why we are letting the winter rain keep us from our mountains come Sunday morning...? But to be honest give me all the best kit there is, but when you look outside at 7am on a Sunday morning and see clouds, rain and wind, my bed and my winter sheets sure looks a lot more comforting than braving Devil's Peak looking like a kitted out Arctic snowman!

So with previous weekends showing us that rain means fewer athletes ready to face the elements, and due to a few key EYB Athletes heading out of town for a special Birthday weekend, we have taken the decision to cancel this weekend and give you all piece of mind come Sunday morning.....a guilt free lie in!

Unfortunately next weekend will also have to be postponed as The Knysna Festival sees many an Athlete jump in their cars come Friday afternoon and race up the Garden Route to try and beat the queues at the beer tent...oh sorry I mean the Registration tent! EYB wishes you all a safe drive and a very happy and enjoyable race!

Good luck with your last week of training and remember its all about Time on Your Legs!! See you out there and look forward to getting back on the mountains once we've found a way to brave the Cape Storm!!

EYB Dominates the 'City Lion' from all angles!!

Athletes,

This Sunday will not see us hiking up Chapman's Peak unfortunately as there is a huge international cycling event that will be blocking up many of the roads leading out towards Silvermine and Chapman's Peak.

We will instead conquer an old favourite being the mighty Lion's Head, but will extend our time on the mountain by hitting the beautiful contour path that circles around the back end of the Lion and up and over the saddle!

Meet Time:
8:30am in the Kloof Nek Car Park (call me on 0795249936 if lost).

Estimated Hike Time: about 3 hours up and down!

What to bring: Hot coffee, Tea, Scarves, Warm Tops... you get the picture!!

Fly Solo on the mountains or launch into the COLD Ocean

Take the plunge - road, ocean or mountain...what will it be??

EYB ATHLETES,

Last week saw 8 plus 2 energetic athletes take to the mountains for what proved to be a beautiful winter's morning out - crisp, clear skies and a route that provided quality city and suburban views, and enough gradient both sides to get the legs firing! Great to have you all out and back on the mountains!

This week sees another EYB Bye as the Cape Town weather guru has predicted a stormy Sunday with rain fore casted from all directions.

This however doesn't deter all athletes as rumour has it there will be many an athlete getting out there this weekend to either compete in the FISHERMAN'S TRAIL CHALLENGE 2007 - check out www.trailrunning.co.za for details, or to take the plunge in the Winter Solstice Clifton Swim. And with 3 weeks to go there are many excited runners across the city getting up in the dark and cold or begrudgingly putting on their shoes after work to take to the roads and mountains in preparation for the upcoming Knysna Marathons!

So to all those either braving the oceans, racing up Blackburn Ravine or heading out for a good weekend training run - EYB wishes you weekend of inspirational earning where creating your own reality is much needed, as the Cape Winter throws us some of her best! Good luck to those competing and see the 2 letters below for details for the annual braving of the Oceans!

Letters from the Arctic Circle....

Potential Polar Bears,

Every year I do this MAD THING – take a swim on the Saturday nearest to the Winter Solstice at CLIFTON 4th BEACH
It’s fun, it’s COLD but what an experience!!

Come and join and bring friends.

See letter below for details if you, by any chance, want to order any of the goodies that are made to order and picked up on the day.

The atmosphere is great and it’s an achievement if you make it – NO WET SUITS, just you and your cozzie!!!

Bring a little flask (hip) of sherry and another of HOT CHOCCIE and a huge warm towel and track-suit for afterwards.

Yours in a cozzie,

POLAR BEAR – alias HEATHER TURNER

Hi Polar Bears

As you know there are only a few weeks to go before we celebrate the winter solstice with our annual dip in the chilly waters of the Atlantic. For the uninitiated, this is our 10th year & is a great day to bring friends & family along. If you're up to it, join the frozen chosen with a sprint into the icy waters ..... otherwise you can just spectate.

Where - Clifton 4th Beach
When - Saturday 23rd June
Time - 9.30am

See you there .... rain or shine !
Chilly regards
Steve Morkel
President : Polar Bear Club

Gear up and gather your friends for next weekend as EYB looks to brave Chapman's Peak for a celebratory one year on the mountains. Details to follow during the week!

EARN YOUR FORRIES

After a week off from the mountains, EYB will be taking on a new route this coming Sunday. The adventure involves minor car logistics, a small climb, spectacular views of the city and beyond, followed by a cheeky descent into Newlands Forest where your pint and Sunday calvary awaits you at Forries...do you need anymore persuasion?

What date:
Sunday, 17th June...Comrades Day

What time:
Meet at Forries at 8:30am - we will leave some cars here and drive through to Tafelberg Rd where we will begin the hike.
Please try your best to be on time, as we want to be on the mountain by 9am - phone if you are running late - 073 808 6116 so that we know to wait for you.

What Route:
Begin at the Devil's Peak saddle on Tafelberg Rd - a slow chilled climb up to the saddle where some rest time will be awarded to those whose hearts are beating at the required pace :) From there we will make our way over the saddle to the Southern Suburbs side, where Newlands Ravine will be awaiting our Elvis Legs. This will take us down into the Forest where we will meet up with the contour path and snake our way down towards the fermenting pints and the smells of Sunday roast! It shouldn't take longer than 3hrs - we will aim to be on the mountain by 9/9:15 latest!!

What to bring:
Warm clothes, the forecast looks ambiguous for the moment so please dress warm and bring raincoats in case.

Four legged Athletes: Dogs are more than welcome, just keep in mind the Forries festivities for later.

Hope to see you all out there for a beautiful and worthwhile morning on the mountains - dust off those hiking boots, don your winter woolies, set your alarms and get those bodies out there to experience the magic and beauty of the Cape mountains.

Inspiring Morning on the Mountain!!

Despite a very small turnout last Sunday, it proved to one of the more inspiring mornings out!! Not long into our stroll up to the 'Eye', we ran into a group of vibey youngsters from an organisation called Hoops 4 Hope. We spent the rest of the morning sharing stories about the beauty of the mighty outdoors and the inspiration it brings to many South Africans.

Thanks to Thabo, who was our 'All Star' for the morning - check out their site by clicking on the Hoops 4 Hope picture above to learn more about the amazing projects they get involved with. Thanks guys!!

Tokai Forest - Elephant's Eye!

Tokai Plantation

Awesome views from the Elephant's Eye!!

Athletes,

This week will see us venture up and up through Tokai forest towards the elephant's eye cave which has great views of the Southern Suburbs and out over the Cape Flats.

There are hundreds of different options to hike in the Tokai area, so we'll see what the vibe is on Sunday and head out accordingly. Please bring out your pooches, their mates, your mates, your family, or anyone else who is keen to spend some time in our beautiful mountains.

Time: 8:45am - we'll see what everyone is keen for but we'll probably be on the mountain for about 3 - 3,5 hours in total!!

Where do I Park?:
Tokai Arboretum - Drive up towards the Old Manor House which is at the very end of Tokai Rd (towards the Tokai Plantation - Steenberg Golf Estate will be on your left). Turn left at the Manor House which will take you all the way to the car park.

What to bring:
Always bring plenty of fluids and a warm top. The weather for Sunday looks dry, and partly cloudy... but always bring the necessary gear for any changes in the weather.

Hope to see everyone out there on Sunday!!! Everyone is welcome!!
