FAMM sees record number of Debutants take to the mountains

View of Lions Head from The Woodstock Cave

Where's Cape Town

What a Vibe

After only 3 weeks of being live on the mountains of Cape Town, FAMM'S numbers soared to new heights as 18 + 2 keen morning athletes attacked Woodstock Cave. What an awesome turn out guys! Friday morning started with a few early sms’s clogging the network as athletes ran late along the chicanes of Table Mountain. One saw a blur of red Ferrari’s, silver bullets and Charlize Theron's minis speed their way around the mountain as they made the way to the starting line. After receiving a fair amount of abuse, the Gadget King himself was parked at the front and geared up by 5:30am while others phoned frantically complaining of the long and windy road....

After gathering the swollen group of athletes, Come Back Kid, AKA Haroun led the way, as we even managed to start with a slight jog. Great to have you back and a part of FAMM CBK! There was a moment where I didn't think you'd make it as your petrol gauge dangled dangerously in the red zone!

The weather played its part and the sunrise provided us with a much needed distraction as we attacked the sneaky hills of Tafelberg Rd. Before we knew it the jogging came to a sudden halt as we spotted our route marker that lead the ascent to the cave. Legs were put into action and banter surprisingly continued as we headed up the rocky path.

A few athletes with Post Hike Work Traffic Constraints (PHWTC) kept a time check and said their sad farewells before making the final summit. Not long after did we all reach The Place of Conception of the Ever Growing EYB Global Community - The Woodstock Cave. It wasn't hard to see where our leaders got their inspiration from, as the awesome views of the city spread before us along with the early morning rays.

One of our new recruits, Hot Dog Man's FLA showed us where to find the best rain water in the cave as he happily slurped up freshly caught rain drops from a conveniently left out bucket. As we caught a few glares from the awoken cave's inhabitants, a record time VAVT was had as the buildings and highways called for us to start the working day. Finishing up the photo shoots of Dallas, Hot Dog FLA and Suza we made our way back down The Yellow Brick Rd and jogged it back in to our waiting cars.

VAVT at its Best

Dallas and new recruit FLA

Luckily for all athletes, the cars were still there on our return, as our very own global leader's car was happily sitting unlocked for the duration of the morning run! One car definitely wasn't heading out to Vida at breaking speed, due to a moment of morning blur, a FAMM recruit had locked his keys in the car. Do not fear though, Camel Man was close by and managed to put some Forest Cellphone Action Vibe (FCAV) into action and a locksmith was awoken from his dreams to come to the rescue of FAMM.

A mini PHV was had with TIF and muffins before heading back along the chicanes and down to our morning sponsor of caffeine and model scouts. The never failing Vida was packed to the hilt with slick city dwellers hoping to catch a glimpse of the infamous group of athletes that are creating a buzz around the city.

A leisurely coffee and breakfast were had by some while others grabbed a "to go" and joined the throng of cars heading to work. Rumour has it that some FAMM athletes were spotted there way into the morning tucking into a newly released bottle of Elgin wine.....

A Special Vida Moment

Another AWESOME morning out on the mountains, great to see the FAMM community growing every week. Thanks to Le Riche for playing navigator and choosing what will become a regular FAMM route! Hopefully see you all and more on the mountains this coming Friday to EARN YOUR WEEKEND!

***UPDATE FROM EYB LONDON***

This Sunday sees the following mighty EYB London athletes take to the streets of London in the Barnes Green Half Marathon. EYB Cape Town wishes you guys luck for the big one - we look forward to the post race report!!

Carl 'il Falco' Husselmann

Grant 'the guru' Gove

Garrick 'TOOIT' Swift

Nic 'Sub 90' Visser

Colleen Cairns

Andrew 'Locksmith' Allison

EYB London athlete Carl 'il Falco' Husslmann reports...

"Well, what is happening with the vibe in London and more importantly the local EYB athletes?

Most of our athletes are currently in preparation for this weeks Barns half-marathan. The plan was always to get Colleen (Jet fuel) Cairns across the line in a sub 1h45. Carl (il Falco) Husselmann and Grant (have you seen my flatscreen) Gove had been steadily building Cols for the big day and then tragedy struck. Cols seems to have picked up a bug and has been relegated to sidelines for the last 10 days whilst on antibiotics. With a show of true commitment Cairns has vowed to go on and has restricted her runs to shorter efforts in the hope to retain all her fitness.

The likes of Garrick and Nick Fish have been suspiciously quiet, but this athlete has had his ear to the ground and vicious rumours abound that Nick has been engrossed in some serious training with a view of breaking that magical 90 min mark(could this be true - or just a over optimistic spouse - we shall wait and see).

Inspired by EYB, we have searched for the next challenge and it fittingly comes in the form of the aptly named "Hellrunner". Click on the link www.hellrunner.co.uk to see whats it all about. 12 miles of mud/water and ferocious climbs. Sounds perfect and more importantly looks like a great vibe!

I promise to bring all the anguish, pain, sweat and eventual jubilation of the weekends half in our next instalment, including photo's.

Dont get stuck, get stuck in!!"

EYB Cape Town athletes Beef, Rooster le Riche, TGK (oh yes... he's been found and is back in the game!!), Kaasenova, Roger that 'Ten Four' Moses, Doorsy (New York Marathon Bus), and our very own 21km debutant Cam 'the aviator' Fuller, will be competing in the GRAPE RUN HALF kicking off at 6:30am on Sunday!

Good luck to all EYB Cape Town and EYB London athletes!

FAMM takes a trip down memory lane

La Riche pondering EYB World Domination

FAMM Athletes,

After attempting a Southern Suburbs summit last Friday, this week's FAMM is going back to the EYB roots, as we head back to the first EVER hike that EYB conquered - the point of creation of EYB world domination, The Woodstock Cave. After last week's fiasco of wondering FLA'S and girlfriends, a known, more reliable EYB route has been chosen. It is said to be a fantastic route with caves, views and a sunrise to remember. The weather man is promising a SPECIAL CT day with sunshine, clear skies and vibe vibe vibe all the way! I can assure you that we will see a cave with a pot of gold and that perhaps even a relocated Cecelia Forest waterfall. We will head out from Tafelberg Rd, maybe even begin with a slight jog for those who are wanting to get the heart rate going. La Riche ,the legend himself, will play chief navigator for this one as I learn the routes of this beautiful city! There will have to be a fair amount of increased heart rate activity for this one if we are to make the cave and be back down in time to start our day's brain activity behind computers. (For those who actually work!) Beef, I promise to work up some kind of sweat vibe, keeping in mind that real athletes don't actually show moisture!

Our Pot of Gold awaiting the FAMM Athletes

Time: 5:45 sharp, Smasher that mean no FA for you the night before as this route requires an early start! Or you can always bring your FA along to meet and greet the famous EYB Athletes...just as long as you attach some sort of homing device to her!

WDIP: Drive along Tafelberg road past the cable station until you can't drive any further because of the road closure. Park on the left. Chariots is a must on all car audio devices.

What must I bring: Locator beacons and tracking devices for all girlfriends and FLA'S. Cell phones will do for those who can't compete with the Gadget King himself. Esop's fable reminds us all to carry ones own phones in case of Forest Cellphone Action Vibe (FCAPV) or bring a Sherpa with you which I always recommend.

Route: We will attempt a sneaky run for the first few km's along Tafelberg road, am assured it is nice and flat at the beginning, as we all try to wake up and rub the sleep from our eyes. Just before a stone gate pillar we will swing a hard right and hike up about 20 mins to the cave. Conversation at this point is a must, surely we can multi task by now!? Expedient VAVT inside the 50 m wide and 20 deep cave is a must along with surveying the awesome sight of our city. Those who don't work may want to bring a tent and set up camp for the weekend. Sunsets are just as highly recommended. Then a quick descent, making sure we have all athletes and FLA'S in tow, as we hopefully "jog it in" back to the cars where coffee and muffins await the special group of FAMM athletes.
If time is looking tight, we may have to skip the full cave summit, either way it'll be a GREAT morning out and a SUPERB way to EARN YOUR WEEKEND!

FLA Friendly: King of the Mountains FLA, who saw a memorable introduction to EYB last week is under review with the panel concerning his future. He will be notified via the FLA network once a decision has been made. Cakes and champagne are always encouraged.

PHV:
With traffic constraints being minimal we can definitely sneak in a well earned vibe at Vida Cafe on Kloof street. Remember to pack your Blue Steel look as model scouts are always on the lookout at this time of day. Alan your famous pout is most necessary.

See you there Athletes and look forward to another mountain summit! Hopefully see some new recruits keen for some extra EYB vibe time!

Sunday's Tranquility MAGIC!!

Athletes, athletes, athletes, what a vibe!!!

Sunday the 22nd of October will go down in the EYB archives as a date
on which the vibe soared to record highs. Inspirational Cape Town
weather-guru Caro Fisher organized sensational conditions for the
troops which saw 24 and 2 athletes arrive at the base of the mighty 12
apostles on the upper edges of Camps Bay!

By 9am, 20 and 2 super-pumped athletes were ready to put foot on the pedal, but were kept in neutral by the late arrival of the 4 eventual
Balloon Award recipients. After a brief disciplinary hearing and some
Mohawk Exposure Vibe (MEV), all was forgiven and the day kicked into full gear.

24 and 2 EYB Athletes

Cam, CBFZ, and Pix

From the start, the route quickly swept us up and onto the pipe track
which kept the troops content and wildy (increased MEV) entertained
with great conversation, awesome views, and a vibe that was brewing
with intensity.

The pipe track snaked its way along the apostles and took us through
some amazing indegenous forests with a few cheeky little ups and downs. We contoured through the spectacular Woody and Slangolie Ravines before arriving at the base of our awesome ascent up the magical Corridor Ravine.

WHAT DANGER???

Migs taking care of TANA, his inspirational FLA regular!

At this point PROPER 'earn your' action kicked in!! The inspirational
banter that was no doubt taking place slowly but surely vanished, only
to be replaced by the awesome sound of 24 and 2 athletes grinding their
way up through the spectacular ravine.

The only sounds eminating from the pack of determined athletes was the
occasional 'Re-group please!!' holler which would bring a welcome rest to our burning legs and roaring hearts!! The Kaasenova has vouched to never hike again on the back of a Red Bull extravaganza the night before..."I promise it was only the Red Bull!".

Tranquility and Serenity in the Corridor Ravine

Final burst up Corridor!

The VIBE hitting all time highs!

Finally arriving at the top of the Ravine, we took a short break to
re-group before Warren, fresh off the Tiger Tiger dancefloor, led us off into the amazing world of the Tranquility Cracks!! After a short detour off the main apostles path we arrived at the Cracks which in no uncertain terms proceeded to once again shut the troops up... this time though was due to the spectacular view and VAVT spot that greeted us on the other side!

Warren the HATT Award victor - couldn't put a foot wrong!

The KAAS leading the vibe in the CRACKS!

Photos could possibly do it justice, words may come closer...but for those who were up there on Sunday morning, it was a special experience and a truly amazing vibe that will not be forgotten!
It has got to be one of the best VAVT (View Appreciation Vibe Time) spots in the Cape Mountains, and full advantage was taken by all EYB athletes. Warren proceeded to raise the vibe to a whole new level...kicked off his dancing shoes, and with little or no regard for his own safety, strung up his hammock for the ultimate chill out session!!

Tranquility Cracks

Warren contemplating his 4am Tiger antics! WHAT A VIBE!

Strawberry delight!

VAVT - out of this world!

Jonty spreading AURA!!

Sue 'Play Pause' Koller - never a dull moment!!

We eventually decided to pack up and head back down the mountain via
the bone crunching Woody Ravine. This decent proved to be a serious workout for the troops, and the party vibe hit fever pitch with some 'disco legs'(DL's) providing some much-needed entertainment. Needless to say, everyone was stoked to have decended down a spectacular ravine, but even more pleased to give the DL's a much needed rest!!

RICHE THRIVING in the face of DANGER!

Debutant Amber playing out of her boots down Woody Ravine!

The smell of pizza and beer then seemed to accelerate the pace somewhat back towards the car park with Jonty, Caro, CFT and Erica in full flight!! From all accounts, Erica, hungry for the PHV, struck a speed wobble at full tilt (apparently also trying to fit in some view appreciation) around a closing bend and couldn't hold her line.

Needless to say she picked up a few scrapes on her arms, a rippt pant,
a dusty pant and a 'soooooore' knee - soon to be forgotten of course a
few hours into the PHV... we wish you a speedy recovery:)!! The CFT with her spanking new trail shoes had no problems negotiating the tight bends, and decided she would carry on running (run forest) to a prior engagement!

Awesome awesome day out on the mountains! Special mention must also go to our two debutants Colin and Richard who caught wind of the EYB wave of vibe through our friends at Splattermail. It was great to see you guys taking on the initiative to join the vibe... hopefully it will inspire others to join in the fun! EYB is growing into a global community of like-minded athletes who believe in getting out there and enriching their lives with the 'Earn Your' philosophy! Colin and Richard... top effort chaps!!

Mission Completed!!

The PHV took us to the newly revamped La Med. With space at a premium, we only managed to secure one table, so instead thought it appropriate to balance things out with 10 buckets of heineken... we definately earned it!! One table soon became two, three, four... global domination!! Obviously full respect went to our fellow comrades enjoying a sunday arvo beverage. Pizza's soon followed and the PHV kicked into full swing.

Beef handing over the HATT AWARD - Warren you beauty!!

Dismal BALLOON AWARD recipients!

Mr and Mrs VIBE!!

What hike? What sweat?

A DJ was also spinning out some very chilled beats to keep us all on the vibe. It's pretty hard to describe the unbelievable nature of the PHV from sunday, but after an epic 4 and half hours in some of the world's most beautiful mountains, kicking back with a well-earned beer and with some awesome company was out of this world!!I'll let the photos above and below tell the rest of the story!

PHV into overdrive

'We are NOT leaving!!!'

'Caro, we are only staying for 1 drink - that's it!'

What vibe?

Contemplating meeting the parents!!

What hike?

TANA, gazing into the EYB FLA future!

JUST ONE DRINK, THAT'S IT!!

Mr and Mrs VIBE looking after Erica's injuries!

Beef and Mrs Vibe

PROPER VIBE - Monday... what's that??

Athletes, all I can say is INSPIRATIONAL... no need for more!!!

Elusive Waterfall Hike Sees the King of the Mountain FLA and his Sidekick Competitor Go Amiss...

Read all about it in today’s EYB Times……

This week’s FAMM saw 10 + 1 keen Athletes take to the mountains for their Earn Your Weekend Vibe, ready to attack Moss's Waterfall in Cecilia Forest. All except one kept to the time, he needs no mention at this stage…he was minus his gadgets but certainly packed his A game after a night of well earned Female Attention (FA). Enough said, a small double back to the car park by the legend himself, La Riche, saw our very own Smasher join the FAMM athletes as we set out for what was to become the Elusive Hunt for the pot of gold under the Waterfall. CFT, let down by her tracker late in the night, led the way by touch, feel and smell – her senses in overload. A steep climb and a sudden silence by all as the legs were put into action….all on the continuous lookout for what was promised to be a spectacular Waterfall showered by moss, Timotei ladies and Archers Aqua Men. After many a chirp coming from the rear, one caught a small glimpse of Grumpy Jen (GJ) which was immediately put to bed before all was revealed and hikers were seen hiding behind the fynbos.

Summit made and still no Waterfall in sight the Athletes took a moment to survey our beautiful city blanketed under mist, and have a well-earned drink of water from the camel pack. Keeping in mind the Teeth And Suck Technique! (TAST). Yes, we are aware of the no teeth rule…
Awesome views and what a day!

Soza showing us the technique

Due to Post Hike Traffic Work Vibe (PHTWV), athletes lifted their game and made a quick descent watching out in case the Waterfall came back from its summer holiday. A small regroup suddenly saw our very own King of the mountains FLA take off in what was said to be Whippet speed. Camel man tried his best to avert a search rescue but alas the hound had one thing on his mind. Getting closer to 7am, athletes continued the descent leaving behind the Pied Piper and his whistle.

After yet another regroup, much confusion and some frantic Forest Cell Phone Action Vibe (FCPAV), we continued down to the carpark, all secure in the knowledge that the King of the mountains FLA had been rescued. Unbeknown to us our new recruit FAMM member had slipped off from right under our noses. A double back hill sprint by two of our finest Athletes saw some frenzied forest calls (FFC) as a new search and rescue team were put into action. Our very own sharing and caring athletes were already by this point digging into their well-earned muffins and TIF, giving much airtime to how, why and when the new FAMM member had gone amiss. Many a scenario was thrown around and continued so, as emails went flying throughout the day.

King of the Mountains, FLA ...AKA Spence

Escorted back safe and sound to the car park, AKA Kerry looked flushed and confused as offers for Survivor EYB were thrown at her from all angles and TV networks. Welcome to FAMM Kerry, next time I’ll be sure to not invite the Spence Master!

Great morning, GREAT Waterfall, Great vibe and Great Athletes. Smasher managed to pull it together for the whole hour regardless of being gadget free. He has however requested the use of locator beacons and tracking devices for all upcoming EYB events!

A sneaky PHV was had (by those who don’t have Post Hike Traffic Work Vibe (PHTWV), ) at Melissa’s amongst the working community of Newlands village.

Thanks for coming out on the mountains and can’t wait to see you up there again next week. A special mention to CFT for her tremendous effort with the navigating, a map well used and a Waterfall I’ll never forget!
EARN YOUR WEEKEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VAVT at its best
